You will be an integral member of
the technical publications team at
Wind River. You will work closely
with engineers and product marketing
managers to build schedules, write
topic-based product documentation,
and improve the overall customer
experience with our products. We are
looking for a writer who cares about
creating polished, consistent,
informative, and accessible
documentation for a highly technical
audience.
Use your strong verbal and written
communication skills, expertise with
authoring tools, and effective
interpersonal skills to create
technical manuals and tutorials for
customer developers writing real-time and network applications.
Requirements:
- A good grasp of complex OS and
embedded programming concepts.
- Familiarity with operating system
APIs, network protocols, and
wireless security protocols (802.1X,
802.11h, WAP, WPS).
- 5+ years experience in tech
writing or related field, including
physics, mathematics, or any of the
sciences that include C programming
exposure.
- Strong FrameMaker and Acrobat
skills are a must.
- Familiarity with IBM Rational
ClearCase (or similar source code
control tools).
- Proven ability to work across
multiple geographical locations.
- BA/BS degree or higher in
computer science, English, or
related field.

This is a fast-paced position
documenting Wind River Workbench, an
Eclipse-based development suite. You
will update existing manuals and
online help topics, write new
documentation where needed,
restructure documents into task-
based topics, and collaborate with
writers and engineers in various
geographic locations. In addition,
you may be required to develop
examples and tutorials, write text
for wizards and other UI elements,
convert FrameMaker-based manuals to
XML, and collaborate on screen
capture videos.
You will be responsible for
describing cross-development for
applications and debugging, so
exposure to Linux and/or VxWorks
embedded software development is a
plus. Familiarity with IDEs and
other graphical development tools is
strongly preferred.
Requirements:
- 7+ years experience in technical
writing or related field, including
physics, mathematics, or any of the
sciences that included programming
exposure
- Familiarity with embedded
systems/device software development
- Expertise in authoring with
FrameMaker
- Familiarity with task-oriented

Junior, Intermediate or Senior
Technical Writer - Nepean, Ottawa
(Contract)
Background:
Samalander has a requirement for a
technical writer on a sub-contract
basis to a major optical equipment
multinational in the Ottawa area.
Term of the contract will be between 2
weeks and 9 months depending on
certain business criteria of the
multinational with a possible first
deliverable February 9, 2010.
Expected hourly rate is $35/hour.
Expected work-load is up to 65
hours/week or $15K/quarter depending
on deliverables.
Expected start date: January 4 to
January 11, 2010.
Interview dates: December 29, 2009 to
January 6, 2010.
Responsibilities:
- The technical writer is
responsible for assisting with the
planning, organizing, writing,
reorganization and editing GR-454
compliant documentation for
telecom/datacom optical transmission
equipment.
- Authors information in a
FrameMaker-DITA structured information
environment.
- Adheres to file coordination
procedures.
- Adheres to time tracking and
reporting requirements.
- High-speed (3 to 10
megabit/second) internet access from
the Home Office.
- Works within a team developing
documentation within an evolving
multi-stream, topic-oriented, CONREF,
and chapter oriented delivery
environment.
- Works under the direction of a
senior technical writer and technical
documentation manager.
- Concise reporting of time
wasting repetitive procedures (current
and forward looking) back to the team
and implementation time-saving
automation solutions developed by
other team members.
Requirements:
- Previous GR-454 (telecom)
experience.
- Strong FrameMaker/DITA XML
experience or strong Structured
FrameMaker experience.
- Some familiarity with direct XML
or XHTML editing/debugging.
- Strong optical communications
module experience.
- Ability to consistently meet
deadlines, and works both
independently and as part of a team.
- Willing to work in a Home Office
or on-site as required.
- References required after
initial interview.
- Preferred Home Office platform:
Mac OS X 10.6 with Windows XP virtual
machine up and running and FrameMaker
9.x installed.
- Required Home Office minimum
platform Windows XP with FrameMaker
9.x installed.
